Realistic Combat Training and How to Conduct It Robert B Rigg 9781258476205 Books

This is “more” than beyond a "fantastic" work-that is STILL REVELANT TODAY! Mr. Rigg “delves” into not only the “real world tangible aspects” of training, but also the “psychology” or mind-set required behind it, as well as the desired “physical” and “psychological” outcome of “realistic training!” It is more than true, that soldiers, just like "world class athlete's" whom spend most of their young lives’ training in usually one event or sport, to develop whole host of things like "muscle memory," "mental toughness," and "reflex action," etc.... soldiers, as well, require the same self-discipline and "training effort-assets” as "world-class" athletes do. Soldiers simply react- after shock of first contact with the enemy- as they are trained..... Ergo the "more" realistic the "training" the better the "reaction" in combat and especially the very "critical" first few "seconds-minutes" of contact with the enemy.....

In various "places" many have observed training conducted with simulated IED's, "fire-works" that represent bullets "coming" from a foe, but nothing in the end equal's training with "live" rounds, under simulated "realistic" combat conditions. This simply builds “confidence” in soldiers’ “equipment” as well as their fellow soldiers- leaders and “organization!” It is more than important that soldiers cannot only utilize their weapons and equipment properly but must also be highly “cognizant” of the “effects” of their given weapon system- be it a pistol, rifle, machine gun, grenade (hand held-or propelled), NBC Suit-Gas Mask, or tank! However, this is not “monetarily cheap” ... but beyond "necessity"...once 'basic" individual level soldier and then "team level(s) skills" are "proficient enough" to "graduate" to this level safely and minimize "risk" of injury, as all "training" very simply incurs some modicum of risk and the more "realistic" the training the more "risk" inherently incurred...! Same as the "more" training- of all types (PT, Rucksack Marches, Walk-Trough's, Chalk Drills, etc..)- the greater the chance of an accident simply occurring.... i.e. "Murphy's Law”… and “hopefully” not due to “equipment” failure”!!!

In the end, however, just like "world class athletes," whom spend a "small fortune" on "training,” - US soldiers and their leaders are only as good as the "cost" spent on their "welfare" and "survival" in actual combat, by and large, by the "quality" and amount of their training as well.... which as everything must be “balanced”..i.e.. not “overtraining” nor “under-training” which can be a “challenge” in and if itself due numerous factors… such as not enough “active” component soldiers to “cover-down” on all US Contingencies, ass simply one example…

Before, draw-downs of various eras’, there used to be “cycles’ of training that were generally universal across the US Army…. i.e. Green. Amber, Red, Blue… that denoted various stages of “readiness”! I.e. “Green” Cycle was simply known by all soldiers and their “dependents” massive time in the “field” and or full-blown unit level training. “Blue” basically, for instance, simply meant “unit” was in “down-time” cycle- Equipment maintenance, soldier skills, and time soldiers and families could take “leave-vacation.!” “Red,” for instance, especially in Rapid Deployment Forces (RDF)- Designated Units- meant on “alert” status with all equipment “palatized” and ready to go within certain “time-frame!” This, system, not only gave soldiers and there families, more stability, but also the Chain of Command much “greater” situational awareness at all levels, of “unit-asset” capability, etc….

Finally, Mr. Rigg, describes “armored” training course where “live” rounds were utilized to hit armor on other tanks without “penetrating” or damaging the armor or crew…. Training with “lasers” etc.. is good, but also lacks the “realism” of the above, as well as “inherent-flaws” as to what truly constitutes “cover v. concealment” ….. which could mean the “difference” between life and death in combat to soldiers and units not already “baptized” by fire... so, to speak… So once again another “challenge” brought forth by Mr Rigg in training “highly” efficient individual soldiers and “teams” at all levels/ echelons!

The "movie" industry utilizes "military" experts to add realism to their films, so why does not the "military" utilize- in reverse- "movie" makers skills and or resources- i.e. "special effects experts", "stunt-crews," etc... in the same manner to design "more" realistic training "ranges" at such places as JTRC, NTC, CMTC, Camp Darby, Camp Lejune, etc....

Mr. Rigg- also wrote another book available on Amazon.com- How to Stay Alive in Vietnam: Combat Survival in the War of Many Fronts! Another fantastic work...and Vietnam vets whom have read in this era, simply wish had had access to this work, at time were in Vietnam.... Furthermore, it could possibly be "utilized" in support of a claim by Vietnam Era veterans with the US Dept. Veterans Affairs.....

“Realistic Combat Training” is still as “relevant” today as it was when initially published, and perhaps needs to be “re-examined” by today’s modern “warriors” and leaders- not only military leaders- in the “never-ending” Global War on Terror….
